“I purchased 22 Warleywoods Crescent in the winter of 1986. This was owned by the health authority along with the other properties in the Crescent and the Hospital Cottages by the railway bridge. The property was derelict when I moved in with my three children.

We lived in two upstairs rooms - one a bedroom, the other a makeshift kitchen/living room and were fortunate to have a bathroom which was just about working. The rest was to be updated as funds allowed. I remember that day very well. Fighting to get to the front door through the rickety gate and overgrown shrubbery but it felt like home.

In 2006, I extended and converted my home to two self-contained apartments, being 22 & 23 and later used the two loft rooms at 23 for my design and creative work. Whilst living close to the town and the railway station, birds can be heard singing from the garden and the open doors from the top flat. It's as though you are in the peaceful countryside. I have explored and had many walks in the grounds just behind me, which was the tranquil healing space of the Hospital residence.

Many of my neighbours of Warleywoods Crescent and the adjoining Hospital Cottages are still there today, which is testimony of a nice place to live. I'm now ready to pass both and my only homes over to others and shall look forward to seeing if they have been returned to the beautiful family home they could be or somewhere which gives others a stepping stone in life and tranquil home.”
